How long does AI SEO take to work?
Expect three speeds. Fixes you make on your own site move fastest, changes in rankings and answers come next, and a strong reputation across the web takes longest.
Most assistants answer buying questions by searching the web. ChatGPT search leans on Bing, and Google's AI Overviews use Google's index. So once a page is fixed and recrawled, it can be read in the next answer. Whether it gets quoted depends on how well it ranks and how it compares with competitors, which takes longer.
What changes in the first few weeks?
The things fully in your control. This is the fast part, and it's where we start.
- Crawler access fixed in robots.txt, so AI search bots can read the site.
- Key copy moved into the static HTML, so nothing hides behind scripts.
- Facts made clear and consistent: services, prices or price signals, areas, turnaround.
- Schema added that matches the pages.
- Google, Bing and Apple listings claimed and matched.
What takes months?
Anything that depends on other people. Reviews, press coverage, comparison lists and rankings for competitive questions all build over time.
This is also the part that makes the difference in crowded markets. If five firms all have clean pages, the assistant names the ones other sites vouch for. That takes months of steady PR, reviews and content, not a single push.
What does a realistic AI SEO timeline look like?
Here's how a typical engagement runs with us, in order. Timings vary with the size of the site and the market.
- Week one: run 20 to 50 buyer questions through the main assistants and log who's named and why.
- Weeks one and two: fix crawler access, rendering, facts and schema on the key pages.
- Weeks two to four: rewrite service pages answer-first and add the missing pages buyers ask about.
- Weeks two to six: claim and match listings, start review requests, ask Bing and Google to recrawl.
- Month two onwards: digital PR, comparison lists and mentions on the sites the assistants cite.
- Every month: re-run the same questions, report changes on the 1st and adjust the plan.
Why do some answers change faster than others?
Because assistants answer in two ways. Some answers come from a live web search, and those can change as soon as the pages they find change. Others come from what the model learned in training, and that only updates when a new model is released.
Questions with fewer competitors and clearer intent move first. Broad, crowded questions, such as "best accountant in the UK", move last. That's why we track a fixed set of questions, from narrow to broad, and report each one.
Can you speed AI SEO up?
A little. Ask for recrawls, fix the pages that matter most first, and put the effort into PR early.
In Google Search Console you can request indexing of a changed page. Bing supports IndexNow, which tells it about new and updated URLs straight away. Beyond that, the fastest route is the one most people skip: getting a few strong mentions on the sites the assistants already cite for your questions.
