AI search for B2B: how buyers shortlist suppliers now

Make the shortlist before the first call.

AI search for B2B companies is about one moment: when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI answers which suppliers to look at, and your business either makes the list or doesn't. B2B buyers research hard before they speak to anyone, and they now use assistants to shortlist, compare and check.

The firms that get named publish clear answers to those questions: what they do, who for, how they compare, what it costs to start and what it plugs into. BidScript, a UK bid management software company, went from about 10 to about 400 Google AI answers a day in 3 months doing exactly that.

Why does AI search matter so much for B2B?

Because B2B buyers do their research alone, and an assistant is now a cheap, fast research assistant. By the time they fill in a form, the shortlist is often set.

A buyer can ask ChatGPT for the best options in a category, ask a follow-up about which ones work with their CRM, then ask for a comparison table. If you're not in the first answer, you're not in the follow-ups either.

What do B2B buyers ask AI assistants?

The same questions they'd ask a well-informed colleague. They're longer and more specific than the keywords most B2B sites were written for.

  • "What's the best [category] software for a [size] company in the UK?"
  • "What are the alternatives to [competitor]?"
  • "Does [your product] integrate with [their tool]?"
  • "[You] vs [competitor]: which is better for [use case]?"
  • "Is [your product] GDPR compliant? Where is the data stored?"
  • "Roughly what does [category] cost to get started?"

How do assistants decide which B2B suppliers to name?

They search, read and compare. For a B2B question they read your site, comparison articles, review platforms and anything else that ranks.

Then they line up the facts: what you do, who you're for, how you differ, what you integrate with and what people say about you. A firm with clear pages on each of those has a much better chance than one with a vague homepage and a "request a demo" button.

How do you get a B2B company named in AI search?

This is the method we used with BidScript and use with other B2B clients, in order.

  1. Collect 20 to 50 real buyer questions from sales calls, demos and support, and run them through the main assistants.
  2. Write your positioning in buyers' words: what you do, who for, and why you win, in one plain paragraph.
  3. Build one page per use case, sector and core feature, each opening with a direct answer.
  4. Publish honest comparison and alternatives pages for the competitors buyers mention.
  5. Make integrations, security, data location and onboarding time public and specific.
  6. Give a price signal: a starting price, a pricing model or what drives cost.
  7. Add Organization, Product or Service and FAQ schema that matches the page.
  8. Earn coverage and reviews where B2B buyers look: trade press, national press, G2, Capterra or Clutch.
  9. Re-run the same questions every month and track Search Console's AI Overview data alongside them.

What worked for BidScript?

Plain answers to the questions bid teams ask. BidScript makes bid management software for UK companies that write tenders, a niche where buyers compare carefully before they book a demo.

We wrote clear positioning, built pages answering bid and procurement questions, published comparison pages, added structured data, fixed the technical SEO and ran digital PR. Google AI answers rose from about 10 a day in June 2026 to about 400 a day in September 2026: 40x in 3 months. Search impressions grew 389% in 6 months, and The Times featured BidScript in July 2026.

Does B2B need different content from B2C?

The format is the same: direct answers, specific facts, pages that load without scripts. The depth is different.

B2B buyers need more proof and more detail before they trust you, and more people sign off the decision. That means more pages on comparisons, integrations, security and results, and more weight on trade press and review platforms. Gated PDFs don't help here. If the answer is behind a form, the assistant can't read it.

How does Foundry do AI search for B2B firms?

We start with your sales team's questions, not a keyword tool. We run them through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI answers, and show you who's named and why.

Then we write the positioning, the use-case and comparison pages, the schema and the PR, and report on the 1st of every month. For B2B firms that want more, Josef works as a fractional CMO across SEO, PR, ads and outbound. If your buyers' assistants should be able to query your product directly, an MCP connector is the next step.

AI search for B2B FAQs

  • Many now use assistants for research, shortlists and comparisons. Ask your own new leads how they found you: it's the quickest way to see it in your market.

  • Yes, if they're fair and accurate. Buyers ask assistants for comparisons, and a clear, honest page gives the assistant something reliable to read. Avoid claims you can't back up.

  • A price signal helps: a starting price, a pricing model or what drives cost. "Contact sales" gives an assistant nothing to compare, so it may name a firm that's clearer.

  • Ungate anything that answers a buyer question. Assistants can't read behind a form. Keep gates for tools or templates where the email is a fair trade.

  • Google AI answers rose 40x in 3 months, from about 10 to about 400 a day between June and September 2026. Search impressions rose 389% in 6 months. Every business starts from a different place.

  • No. Assistants decide who to name, and answers change. We can make your business clear, specific and well-backed, which is what assistants look for.
