What is ad creative fatigue?
It's the drop in performance when an audience has seen an ad too many times. The first few views get attention. After that, people scroll past, or worse, hide it.
It's most common on Meta and TikTok, where ads sit in feeds people scroll through many times a day. Search ads suffer far less, because they only show when someone searches.
What are the signs of ad creative fatigue?
Look for these together. One on its own can have other causes, such as a seasonal dip.
- Frequency climbing: the same people are seeing the ad more and more often.
- Click-through rate falling week on week, on the same audience.
- Cost per result rising while targeting and budget stay the same.
- Ad relevance diagnostics in Meta Ads Manager slipping below average.
- More negative comments or hides on an ad that used to do well.
What causes creative fatigue?
Mostly the maths of audience size and budget. A small audience with a big budget sees each ad again and again. Retargeting audiences tire fastest of all.
Thin creative makes it worse. If an account has two or three ads, the platform has nothing else to show.
How do you fix ad creative fatigue, step by step?
This is the routine we run on paid social accounts. It turns fresh creative into a habit, not a panic.
- Check frequency, click-through rate and cost per result for each ad every week.
- Mark ads whose results are sliding while frequency climbs.
- Write new angles, not just new versions: a different problem, benefit, objection or customer type.
- For each angle, make a few hooks: the first line or first seconds of video.
- Mix formats: short video, static image, carousel, and creator-style footage.
- Launch new ads in batches alongside the current ones, rather than switching everything at once.
- Give each batch enough spend and time to judge on results, not first impressions.
- Keep the winners, retire the tired ones, and write down what worked.
- Plan the next batch before this one wears out.
How often should you refresh ad creative?
There's no fixed schedule. Refresh when your own numbers say so. Accounts with small audiences or big budgets may need new creative every few weeks; broad audiences on modest budgets can run the same ads for months.
What matters is always having something tested and ready to swap in.
Does broad targeting help with fatigue?
Often, yes. A wider audience means each person sees the ad less often. Meta's own guidance leans towards broad audiences with a variety of creative, letting the system find who responds.
Variety still matters. Broad targeting with one ad just tires a bigger audience more slowly.
