TikTok Ads for small business

Make TikToks, not ads.

TikTok Ads for small business work best when your customers use TikTok and you can make short, vertical videos that look like they belong there. You set up campaigns in TikTok Ads Manager, pick an objective, a budget and an audience, and the platform shows your videos to people likely to act.

The video does most of the work: a polished ad that looks like an ad usually loses to a simple, honest clip.

Are TikTok Ads worth it for a small business?

They can be, if two things are true: your customers spend time on TikTok, and you can make a steady flow of short videos. If either is missing, your budget will probably do more on Meta or Google first.

TikTok tends to suit products and services that are easy to show: food, beauty, fitness, home improvement, local experiences and anything with a satisfying before and after. It's harder, though not impossible, for services that are hard to film.

How do TikTok Ads work?

You build campaigns in TikTok Ads Manager, using the same three levels as other platforms. The campaign sets the objective. The ad group sets the audience, budget, schedule and placements. The ad is the video itself.

Objectives range from reach and video views to traffic, lead generation and sales. Pick the one that matches the result you want. TikTok then runs an auction for each view and shows your ad to people its system expects to act.

Which TikTok ad types suit a small business?

Four options cover what most small businesses need.

  • In-feed ads: videos that appear in the For You feed, with a button to your site or form.
  • Spark Ads: your own organic posts, or a creator's with their permission, run as ads. They keep the likes and comments, and look native.
  • Promote: a quick way to boost a post from the TikTok app. Simple, with fewer controls.
  • Smart+ campaigns: TikTok automates targeting, bidding and creative mix. Useful once tracking is solid.

What makes a TikTok ad work?

The best TikTok ads don't look like ads. These basics matter most.

  • Vertical, full-screen video, shot on a phone if that's what you have.
  • A hook in the first moment: the result, the problem or a surprising line.
  • Sound on. Music, voice and trending audio are part of how TikTok works.
  • Real people on camera, talking like they would to a friend.
  • On-screen text for the key point, for anyone watching muted.
  • One message per video, and a clear next step at the end.

How do you track TikTok Ads?

Install the TikTok Pixel on your website and connect the Events API, which sends events from your server. Together they tell TikTok who enquires or buys after seeing an ad.

Without them, TikTok optimises for views and clicks, and you can't tell which videos make money. Set up a lead or purchase event before you spend.

How should you start with TikTok Ads for small business?

Follow these steps in order for a first campaign. It keeps the budget focused while you learn.

  1. Set up a TikTok business account and a TikTok Ads Manager account.
  2. Install the TikTok Pixel and the Events API, and check events are arriving.
  3. Post five to ten organic videos, so you have a profile worth visiting and some posts to test.
  4. Pick the two or three posts that did best and run them as Spark Ads.
  5. Choose the Lead generation or Sales objective, set your location and keep the audience broad.
  6. Set a budget that can sustain a steady flow of results, and leave it for about a week.
  7. Cut the weakest videos, and make new ones in the style of the winners.
  8. Add fresh videos every week or two, because TikTok audiences tire of an ad quickly.

What mistakes should you avoid with TikTok Ads?

Most wasted TikTok budgets make the same few mistakes.

  • Running a TV-style or landscape ad that screams "advert".
  • Launching with one video and no plan for the next.
  • Skipping tracking and judging success on views.
  • Targeting too narrowly, so the system has nobody to learn from.
  • Sending people to a slow page that doesn't match the video.

How does Foundry run TikTok Ads?

We start with a short call about who buys from you and whether they're on TikTok. If they aren't, we'll say so. Then you get a written plan and a fixed price before we start.

We set up tracking first, then edit your footage into vertical videos made for the feed, with hooks, captions and sound. Robert S., our Head of PR & Content, leads video editing for clients' ads. We test several hooks at once, keep the winners and report on enquiries and sales.

TikTok Ads FAQs

  • No, but it helps. A profile with real posts gives people something to check, and your best organic posts can run as Spark Ads.

  • Ads made from existing TikTok posts, yours or a creator's with their permission. They keep the post's likes and comments, and look like normal TikToks.

  • TikTok sets minimum budgets at campaign and ad group level, which can change. Check the current figures in TikTok Ads Manager before you plan.

  • Sometimes, especially for hiring or for products that are easy to show. For most B2B buyers, LinkedIn or Google is a better first step.

  • Start with several, so TikTok can test them, and plan to add new ones every week or two. One video won't last long on TikTok.

  • Not usually. Clear, honest phone footage with a strong hook often beats polished studio video on TikTok. Good editing makes the difference.
