UGC ads guide: what works and what's allowed

Real people. Real rules.

This UGC ads guide covers ads that look and sound like real customers talking about your product, shot on a phone by a creator or customer. They work because they feel native to the feed; to stay on the right side of UK rules, every testimonial must be genuine and backed up, paid content must be clearly labelled, and you need permission to use it in ads.

What are UGC ads?

UGC means user-generated content. In ads, it usually means short videos of a real person using, reviewing or unboxing your product, filmed on a phone in a natural setting.

Some UGC comes from customers. More often it's made by paid creators who specialise in this style. Both can work, and both come with rules.

Why do UGC ads work?

They fit the feed. On Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, a person talking to camera looks like the posts around it, so people watch long enough to hear the point.

They also show the product in use, answer objections in a customer's words, and are cheap to make in volume, which helps with creative fatigue.

What are the UK rules for UGC ads?

In the UK, ads are covered by the CAP Code, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). These are the points that matter most for UGC. Check the current CAP guidance for your sector.

  • Ads must be obviously identifiable as ads. Paid creator content should be labelled up front, for example with "#ad" or the platform's paid partnership label.
  • Testimonials must be genuine, relate to the product being advertised, and you must hold evidence that they are real.
  • Claims in a testimonial count as your claims. If a creator says it "cures" or "saves hours", you need proof.
  • You need the person's permission to use their content and name in your ads.
  • Health, beauty, finance and children's products have extra rules. Before-and-after footage needs care.
  • Fake reviews and testimonials are banned under UK consumer law.

UGC ads guide: how do you make them, step by step?

This is the process we follow. It keeps the content natural and the paperwork clean.

  1. Pick one product and one customer type for each batch.
  2. List the real reasons people buy, and the doubts that stop them, from reviews, emails and sales calls.
  3. Write a short brief: the angle, three or four hooks to try, the points to cover, and what not to say.
  4. Choose creators who look and talk like your customers, not just people with big followings.
  5. Agree usage rights in writing: where the content can run, for how long, and whether it runs from your account or theirs.
  6. Send the product and let them use it for real before filming.
  7. Check every claim in the footage against evidence you hold. Cut anything you can't back up.
  8. Edit several cuts with different hooks, add subtitles, and label paid content clearly.
  9. Test the cuts against each other and against your existing ads, and judge them on results.

Should UGC run from your account or the creator's?

Both work. Running from your own account is simpler. Running from the creator's handle, through Meta partnership ads or TikTok Spark Ads, can feel more native, but needs their permission and a clear agreement.

Either way, the ad must be labelled as an ad, and the rules on claims still apply.

What makes a UGC ad fail?

Usually one of these.

  • A slow start. If the first seconds don't hook, nobody hears the rest.
  • Over-scripting, so it sounds like an advert read aloud.
  • A creator who doesn't look like your customer.
  • No clear next step at the end.
  • One video with no variations to test.

How does Foundry run UGC ads?

We write the brief and the hooks, check claims against the evidence you hold, and Robert edits the footage into several cuts for testing. Then we run them on Meta or TikTok alongside your other ads and judge them on results in your own reporting.

Meta Ads set-up takes about 4 hours on average. We update campaigns twice a month and report on the 1st.

UGC ads FAQs

  • If you've paid for the content or are running it as an ad, it must be obviously identifiable as advertising. The ASA's influencer guidance recommends a clear label such as "#ad" up front.

  • Yes, if they're genuine, about the product you're advertising, used with permission, and you keep evidence. Any factual claim in them needs to be backed up.

  • Only with their permission. Ask in writing, and agree where and how long you can use it.

  • Usually, for content made to order. Agree the fee and the usage rights up front, including paid ads.

  • Not always. They often do well on TikTok and Reels. Polished ads can work better for premium products. Test both.

  • Long enough to make one point well. Test short and longer cuts. Our guide to video ad length covers it.
