How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Be the source Google quotes.

To appear in Google AI Overviews, your page needs to be indexed by Google, allowed to show as a snippet, and one of the clearest answers to the question. There's no sign-up and no special markup: AI Overviews use normal Googlebot and draw on Google's search results.

Put a plain answer straight after each question-style heading, keep the facts in the HTML, and build the rankings the answer draws on. Google decides what to cite, so nobody can guarantee a place.

How do you appear in Google AI Overviews?

You make your page easy for Google to find, read and quote, then build the rankings it draws on. There's nothing to apply for and no switch to turn on.

AI Overviews are built from Google's own search index. When someone searches, Google writes a short answer at the top of the results and links to the pages it used. The pages it picks are the ones that answer the question clearly and that its ranking systems already trust.

So the work is SEO with a sharper focus: clear answers, specific facts, and pages Google can crawl and quote without any trouble.

What are Google AI Overviews?

They're the AI-written summaries that appear above the normal results for some searches, with links to the pages they draw on. AI Mode is the conversational version, where people can ask follow-up questions.

They tend to show for questions and comparisons rather than simple brand searches. "How long does a website take to build?" is far more likely to get one than "Foundry Agency".

How does Google choose which pages to cite?

It uses the same systems that rank normal results. Pages that are indexed, trusted and clearly answer the question are the ones it quotes.

Google also runs several related searches behind the scenes, which it calls query fan-out. A search for "web design cost" might also pull in results for small business sites, online shops and redesigns. That's why AI Overviews sometimes cite pages that don't rank in the top few results for the original search, as long as they answer one part of the question well.

What is the step-by-step method?

These are the eight steps we work through. The first three make you eligible. The rest make you the page Google picks.

  1. Check each important page is indexed, using URL Inspection in Google Search Console.
  2. Make sure nothing blocks Googlebot or snippets: robots.txt rules, noindex, nosnippet or a very short max-snippet.
  3. Put the key copy in the HTML, so nothing depends on scripts loading or tabs being clicked.
  4. Phrase headings as the questions people search for, and answer each one in the first one or two sentences.
  5. Be specific: prices, timings, locations and steps are easier to quote than general claims.
  6. Add structured data that matches the words on the page.
  7. Build rankings for the question and the related questions around it, with internal links, useful depth, and mentions and links from digital PR.
  8. Track it: check Search Console every month, and search the key questions yourself to see who gets cited.

What stops a page appearing in AI Overviews?

Five problems come up most often. All five can be fixed.

  • The page isn't indexed, so Google can't use it at all.
  • A nosnippet or very short max-snippet setting stops Google quoting it.
  • The answer is buried halfway down the page, or spread across several pages.
  • The key facts are in images, PDFs or text that only loads with scripts.
  • The page says something general where the question needs a specific answer.

Does blocking Google-Extended affect AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train and ground Google's Gemini models. AI Overviews are part of Google Search and use normal Googlebot.

Blocking Googlebot would take you out of Google Search altogether, which nobody selling online wants. If you want a page in Search but out of AI Overviews, use a nosnippet tag instead.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

There's no fixed timeline. Once a page is indexed and ranking for the question, it can be cited quite quickly. Building those rankings in a competitive market takes months.

BidScript, a UK bid management software company, went from about 10 to about 400 Google AI answers a day in 3 months. The work behind it was clear facts, comparison pages, structured data and digital PR.

How does Foundry get pages into AI Overviews?

We start with the questions your buyers search. We check which ones show an AI Overview, who gets cited, and which of your pages could answer them.

Then we fix those pages: answer-first headings, specific facts in the HTML, structured data and snippet settings. We build rankings with SEO and digital PR, and check the same questions every month to see what changed.

AI Overviews are one part of AI search. The same facts and listings help ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name you too.

Google AI Overviews FAQs

  • No. There's no sign-up or form. Any page Google has indexed and is allowed to show as a snippet is eligible, and Google picks what to cite.

  • No. Google says no special markup is needed. Structured data still helps Google understand a page, as long as it matches what's visible on it.

  • Use a nosnippet tag, data-nosnippet on the part you want to keep out, or a short max-snippet. A noindex tag removes the page from Google Search entirely.

  • Mostly. AI Mode is conversational and runs more related searches behind the scenes, but the same pages are eligible and the same work helps you get cited.

  • Search Console counts appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode in its Performance report, alongside your normal web results. We also check the key questions by hand every month.

  • No, but they're linked. AI Overviews draw on pages Google already trusts for the question and the searches around it, so strong rankings make a citation much more likely.

  • No. Google decides what to cite, and it changes from search to search. What you can control is whether your pages are eligible, clear and trusted.
