llms.txt template
Your business, summed up for AI.
This llms.txt template follows the format proposed at llmstxt.org: a title, a one-line summary, a few key facts, then lists of links to your most useful pages. Fill in the brackets, save it as llms.txt and upload it to the root of your site, so it loads at yourdomain.co.uk/llms.txt.
It takes minutes and gives AI tools a clean summary of your business. It isn't a ranking factor and won't guarantee a mention.

An llms.txt file is Markdown with a fixed order: a title, a summary, some detail, then sections of links. Only the title is required.
- 1
Title
One line starting with #: your business name. This is the only required part.
- 2
Summary
One line starting with >. Say what you do, who for and where, as a sentence an assistant could quote.
- 3
Key facts
Plain text or a bullet list, with no headings. Address, areas, prices, turnaround, contact details and how to start.
- 4
Link sections
Each section starts with ## and lists links as - [name](url): note. Services, proof and company pages are a good start.
- 5
Optional
A section headed ## Optional holds links a tool can skip when it needs a shorter summary, such as guides or blog posts.
Where does the llms.txt file go?
At the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so it loads at yourdomain.co.uk/llms.txt. Save it as plain text in UTF-8.
Use full URLs in the links, and only link to pages that are live, public and not blocked in robots.txt. If your site runs on a platform that doesn't let you upload files to the root, your developer or host can usually add it for you.
What does Foundry's own llms.txt look like?
Ours opens with the one-sentence summary we use everywhere, then lists key facts: when we were founded, the team, our address, phone and email, our averages, "websites from £499 + VAT" and how to start. Below that are links to every service page, our case studies and our company pages.
It's generated from the same content files as the website, so a price or average changed on the site changes in llms.txt too. We also publish a longer llms-full.txt with the summary, At a glance facts and FAQs from each service page.
Which llms.txt mistakes should you avoid?
Most problems come from facts that don't match the site, or from treating the file as an advert.
- Facts that disagree with your site.If llms.txt says one price and the service page says another, neither looks reliable.
- Marketing copy.Plain facts are easier to quote than slogans.
- Links to blocked or broken pages.Every link should load and be open to crawlers.
- Headings in the summary.Keep the detail before the first ## as plain text or bullets.
- Setting it and forgetting it.Update it when your prices, services or address change.
llms.txt template FAQs
OpenAI hasn't said ChatGPT uses it. ChatGPT can read your normal pages without it, so treat llms.txt as a helpful extra, not a fix.
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit. llms.txt is a plain summary of your business with links to your key pages. You need robots.txt set up correctly either way.
A longer companion file some sites publish, with fuller text from their key pages. It's optional. Start with llms.txt.
Short. A summary, ten or so key facts and links to your main pages is enough for most businesses.
Not usually. It's one text file uploaded to the root of your site. Some platforms make that harder, in which case your host or developer can add it.
Yes. Our llms.txt generator builds the file from a short form, in your browser.
