UTM builder

Know which link brought the sale.

This UTM builder adds campaign tags to any link, so Google Analytics can tell you which email, post or ad sent each visitor. Paste your page URL, fill in utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and copy the tagged link.

It runs in your browser, and nothing is sent to us.

How the UTM builder works

Three required fields, two optional. The link builds as you type.

  1. 1

    Website URL

The page you're linking to, starting https://. Any query string or #anchor already on it is kept.

  2. 2

    Required tags

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. The builder tells you which are still missing.

  3. 3

    Optional tags

utm_term for a paid search keyword, utm_content to tell apart two ads or links in the same campaign.

  4. 4

    Copy

Copy the finished URL in one click. If a tag has capitals or spaces, you get a tip to tidy it.

Nothing you type is sent to us.

Any query string or #anchor already on the URL is kept.

Where the click comes from, e.g. google, facebook, newsletter.

The type of traffic, e.g. cpc, social, email.

The campaign name, e.g. spring-sale.

Paid search keyword, if you want to track it.

Tells apart ads or links in the same campaign, e.g. banner-a.

Your tagged URL

Add the website URL plus utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and your link appears here.

What each UTM parameter means

Five tags, each answering one question about the click. The first three are the ones you'll use every time.

utm_sourceWhere did the click come from?facebook, newsletter, google

UTM naming tips that keep reports clean

Tags only help if they're consistent. Agree a few rules and stick to them.

  • Lowercase everything.Google Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources. The builder warns you if it spots capitals.
  • Hyphens, not spaces.Spaces get encoded as + in the URL. spring-sale is easier to read than spring+sale.
  • Use standard mediums.Stick to plain values like email, social and cpc, so Analytics files the traffic under the right channel.
  • Keep a list.A shared sheet of sources, mediums and campaign names stops five spellings of the same thing.
  • Don't tag internal links.UTMs on links between your own pages overwrite where the visitor really came from.

Is my information private?

Yes. The builder runs in your browser. Your URL and tags are not sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is saved.

UTM builder FAQs

  • Yes. No sign-up and no email needed.

  • Usually not. With auto-tagging switched on, Google Ads clicks are tracked in Google Analytics without UTM tags. Use UTMs for email, social posts, Meta ads and anything else.

  • In this builder, utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term and utm_content are optional extras.

  • In Google Analytics, in the traffic acquisition reports, by session source, medium and campaign.
