SEO vs Google Ads: which is right for your business?

Ads rent the top spot. SEO earns it.

In SEO vs Google Ads, the choice is between speed and staying power: Google Ads can put you at the top of search results within days but stops the moment you stop paying, while SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing visitors without a cost per click. Most growing businesses do best with both, using ads for demand now and SEO for demand later.

What's the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

Both put you in Google's search results. Google Ads buys a place in the sponsored slots, usually paying each time someone clicks. SEO earns a place in the unpaid results by making your site the most useful, trusted answer.

You can't buy organic rankings, and you can't rank an ad by writing better content alone. They sit side by side on the same page, which is why buyers so often see them as competing options. They're really two tools for the same job.

Which is faster, SEO or Google Ads?

Google Ads, by a long way. Once a campaign is approved, ads can show the same day. Our Google Ads setups average 3 hours.

SEO builds over months. Technical fixes can be picked up as soon as Google crawls the page again, but rankings for competitive searches take sustained work on pages, links and reputation.

Which costs less over time?

It depends on how long you're looking. With ads, every visitor costs a click, for as long as you run them. With SEO, you pay for the work, and the traffic it earns doesn't carry a cost per click.

Over a few weeks, ads are usually the cheaper way to get a sale. Over a few years, SEO usually brings visitors at a lower cost each, because good rankings keep working. That's a general pattern, not a promise: both depend on your market, your competitors and how well the work is done.

When should you choose Google Ads first?

Start with ads when you need enquiries soon or want to learn fast.

  • You're launching a new business, product or location.
  • You have a time-limited offer or a seasonal peak.
  • Your site is new and has little chance of ranking yet.
  • You want to test which searches turn into sales before investing in pages for them.
  • Your buyers search with clear intent, such as "emergency plumber near me".

When should you choose SEO first?

Start with SEO when you can wait for results and want them to last.

  • Clicks in your market are expensive, and you want to rely less on ads over time.
  • Buyers research for a while before they choose, reading guides and comparisons.
  • You want to show up in AI assistants' answers, which lean on the pages that rank.
  • Your site already has some authority and only needs the right pages and fixes.

How do you decide between SEO vs Google Ads?

Answer these six questions in order. The answers usually make the choice for you.

  1. How soon do you need enquiries? Within weeks points to ads.
  2. How long will you be selling this? Years points to SEO.
  3. Is your site ready to convert visitors? If not, fix that first, whichever you choose.
  4. Can you track enquiries and sales back to their source? Set that up before spending on either.
  5. What are your competitors doing? Gaps in their ads or their rankings show where you can win.
  6. Can you fund both for a few months? If so, run ads now and build SEO alongside.

Why run SEO and Google Ads together?

Because each makes the other better. The search terms report in Google Ads shows exactly which searches turn into enquiries, which tells you which pages to build for SEO. Strong landing pages built for SEO tend to help ads convert, too.

Backpedal, a UK stolen bike recovery and insurance business, runs both with us. After our Google Ads rebuild, its conversion rate was 7x higher in the first full month. Its organic traffic grew 50% every quarter for 12 months.

SEO vs Google Ads FAQs

  • Neither is better on its own. Ads are faster and easier to control. SEO is slower but keeps working without a cost per click. The right mix depends on how soon you need results and how long you'll be selling.

  • Not directly. Google keeps ads and organic rankings separate. But ads data shows which searches convert, which makes your SEO work far better targeted.

  • If you need enquiries in the next few weeks, start with ads and fix the SEO basics alongside. If you can wait a few months, SEO first can cost less over time.

  • Sometimes, for searches where you rank at the top. Many businesses keep ads running for their most valuable searches, offers and new services.

  • Google Ads is the biggest pay-per-click (PPC) platform. PPC also covers Microsoft Advertising and paid social, which work in a similar way.

  • There's no fixed timeline. It depends on your market, your site and the work put in. Our guide to how long SEO takes covers what to expect.
